In newspaper accounts of the battle, Robert was blamed unfairly. People called him “Granny Lee.” They said he was too afraid to attack.

It was a hard time for Robert. He felt ashamed. Also, conditions for the soldiers were bad. The weather was turning colder. Rain fell. There were no tents. Many men didn’t even have coats. Robert had a coat and a tent, yet he could not sleep at night as his men shivered.

The Union enemy still loomed on the other side of the mountain. Again, Robert launched an attack. But this failed, too.

Robert was “carrying the heavy weight of defeat,” Jefferson Davis wrote. “And unappreciated by the people whom he served, for they could not know, as I knew, that, if his plans and orders had been carried out, the result would have been victory rather than defeat.”
