2 A suggestion which fits in with Humphrey’s intuition that consciousness may ultimately derive from rather basic biological phenomena.
3 Incidentally, Edelman and Tononi’s emphasis on highly accurate reciprocal mapping being at the basis of conscious neural activity, if correct, suggests another reason for thinking that spike activity cannot be directly involved. Neuron firing is stochastic, so mapping dependent on it is always going to be blurry to some extent.
4 Astroglia are brain cells that surround neurons and synapses. At one time they were thought to be of little interest, except as ‘housekeepers’, but are now known to be capable of influencing synaptic transmission, and generally appear to have important, but little understood, parts to play in what the brain does (see Fields, 2010, for a comprehensive account of the many parts they may play). For instance, their activity is now thought to be primarily responsible for the BOLD signal of fMRI. Just like neurons, they are organized into networks although astroglial network connections are via gap junctions between cells (Giaume et al., 2010), not via the synapses that play the major role in connecting neurons (though gap junctions between dendrites belonging to different neurons are quite plentiful).
