Batista had learned of the rebels’ plan and was ready for them. Airplanes and patrol boats shot at Fidel and his men. The revolutionaries fled into the nearby mountains. They found a hideout, but on December 5, the government army caught up with them. Many were killed or captured. Some ran away for good. Once again, Fidel’s plans had failed.

Only Fidel, Raul, and fewer than twenty other men escaped. This small group retreated farther into the mountains. There they met many men and women who had hard lives. They were eager to join Fidel’s cause. They believed Fidel’s promise that his revolution would give them better lives.
