In the 1940s, however, Chuck began to break away from the Disney formula and develop his own style of storytelling. A major turning point was The Draft Horse in 1942. World War II was in full swing by then.

The United States had entered the war after Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was bombed in December 1941.

Chuck directed a cartoon about a horse that rushes to enlist in the army. The horse gets rejected and ends up knitting sweaters for soldiers. Chuck gave the horse a wacky personality and an energy not seen in his earlier films.
