Reggie Starling and the Adventure of the Crown Jewels

Kat Clay

Three generations of corgis glared down at me from the paintings on the walls. As I flew into the elegant office, I felt their snooty little eyes following me, as if I’d dirty the furnishings with my claws.

Before me, the very real Lady Augustina Flooflebottom the Third sat in a velvet-lined basket by the fire, paws crossed, looking gravely serious – as serious as a dog with fluffy ears can look – and said, ‘When I requested Scotland Yard’s finest, I did not expect a bird.’

‘What you got against birds?’ I said. I had been summoned from my nest in the early hours of the morning by a gruff-faced beefeater demanding I go immediately to the home of Lady Flooflewhatsit, so I had quickly smoothed last night’s birdseed from my feathers and flitted through the city to Marylebone Gardens. The warm fire made me wish I’d drank some more water before I went to sleep.

‘If Scotland Yard says you’re the best, then I take their word for it. This case might need someone with a little more of your…street experience.’ She sniffed the air, as if she had detected a great big ponging smell. I resisted the urge to sniff my wings.

She continued, ‘We are in a grave and desperate situation, Inspector Starling. In the early hours of this morning, the Yeoman Warders discovered that the St Edwards Crown has been stolen from the Tower of London.’

I held back a gasp. The crown jewels were missing!

‘The coronation of King William is in two days. We must have the crown returned, otherwise the ceremony cannot take place,’ she said.

Not only was the Tower thought to be impenetrable, after Colonel Blood tried to steal the jewels last century, but who would want to steal the crown itself ? The piece was instantly recognizable; you couldn’t fence it at a hock shop without someone noticing.

‘Do you have any suspects in mind?’ I asked.

‘This was delivered to the palace by anonymous courier pigeon early this morning.’

She gestured to a letter on a low table. I perched on the edge as I read it.
