“Come on in,” Maud said to Krysteen. “You look like someone ran over your dog.”

Krysteen walked in, grabbed a Sprite from the mini-fridge, and sat down. Not waiting for Krysteen to put the wet can down on Maud’s prized antique aircraft carrier-sized desk, she slid a coaster over to Krysteen. Putting the can down on the coaster, Krysteen popped the top. The can fizzed, and Krysteen took a sip. “That’s good!” she said. Then she just looked at Maud.

Maud fidgeted in her office chair. “Did I miss something?”

Krysteen looked taken aback. “You haven’t heard?”

“Heard what?” Maud asked.

At that exact moment, Maud’s office phone rang. It was Regan. “Incoming!” Regan said. That was their code for when Kintz barged into the store and walked up to Maud’s office without being invited.

Maud hung up the phone. “No, I haven’t heard, but I think I’m about to. Margot is headed up here right now.” Right as Maud said, Kintz walked in. Without saying a word, she reached into the mini-fridge, got out a bottle of water, sat down, and unscrewed the cap. After taking a rather long drink, she put the cap back on and set the bottle down on the floor.

“How are things?” Kintz asked perfunctorily. Then she turned to Krysteen. “Does she know?”

Maud was tired of all the tiptoeing around. “Do I know what?” she asked.

“I thought Krysteen would have told you yesterday,” Kintz said obliquely.

Maud looked at Krysteen expectantly.

“I was at the dentist most of yesterday,” Krysteen said. “Root canal?”

Maud already knew about the root canal.

“You know how I am after all that Novacaine. It wipes me out. I slept for the rest of the day,” Krysteen protested.

“And I was happily working,” Maud said in an exasperated manner. “But would someone please tell me what’s going on?”

“I will,” Krysteen said.

“I’m here now, I might as well,” Kintz said, overruling Krysteen. “We arrested Trey Vermillion yesterday for the murder of Francis in ’06.”

“Okay,” Maud said. “That’s good news…I think!”

“Well, it’s good and not so good,” Krysteen said.

“He was out on bail by lunch,” Kintz explained. “Big lawyer from Tallahassee and all that.”

“And then this morning,” Krysteen said. “Tell her what happened this morning.”

“Yes,” Maud said. “Would someone please tell me what happened this morning?”

“Well, he…” Kintz started to explain, then she pantomimed the rest. She mimed putting something around her neck and pulling up very hard.

“He did?” Maud asked. She was surprised, but then again, she didn’t know Trey Vermillion. So, this was just gossip in a way. Interesting, but not emotionally compelling.

“Yep,” Kintz said. “He did.”

“Are you sure he was guilty?” Maud asked.

“Doing away with yourself like that is pretty much an admission of guilt, don’t you think?” Kintz said.

Maud thought for a moment.

Kintz reached down to the floor and got her bag and half-empty water bottle. She threw the bottle into Maud’s trash basket.

“New bag?” Krysteen asked.

“Mirabella,” Kintz said, posing like a model as she did so. Then she left.

Maud pretended like she knew what brand Kintz was referring to.
