CHAPTER NINE

“THEY FINALLY GOT ME.”

Fourteen years had passed. John Carpenter was now 63 years old. His “Beatle” haircut was streaked with grey and he had put on quite a bit of weight. He had hoped his infamous connection to Bob Crane’s murder would eventually fade in the rearview mirror. But what Carpenter saw in the rearview mirror of his Mazda RX-7 the morning of June 1, 1992 wasn’t a fading image of the past, but the past, like a wave, about to crash on top of him.

At a little after 6 a.m., Carpenter was making his usual commute to Kenwood USA electronics, where he was the national service manger. He noticed several cars following him. In the South Los Angeles suburb of Carson, three unmarked cars surrounded Carpenter and forced him over to the side of a surface street. Officers piled out of their cars with guns drawn.

Carpenter knew instinctively what was coming. Maricopa County investigator Jim Raines, hopped out of the car, clutching his badge, and took great personal pleasure in announcing, “Jooooo…hn,” Raines dragged out his name for effect. “Jim Raines, Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. You’re under arrest for the murder of Bob Crane.”

According to Raines, Carpenter stood there, outside the car, expressionless. He said nothing. According to Raines, “He didn’t even blink his eyes. He had a dead-deer look on his face that never changed.” Carpenter was cuffed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officers and loaded into a patrol car for the 20-minute ride to the station. He said nothing during the ride. Once at the police station, Raines told Carpenter he wanted to talk to him. Carpenter said he would have to call his attorney. At that point, Raines says he backed off.

In another account of that exchange, from John Carpenter, Raines showed him pictures of the blood in his rental car. Carpenter denied knowing what it was. According to Carpenter, he was also shown the speck of tissue on the car door. When asked if he knew what it was, he simply said, “No, sir.”

Raines says he doesn’t recall showing Carpenter any photos that day. According to Raines, Carpenter called his wife and simply proclaimed, “Well, they finally got me.” An odd statement from a man who insisted he had nothing to do with the murder of Bob Crane.

Later that afternoon, a press conference was called at the Maricopa County Attorney’s office to announce new information in the investigation into the murder of Bob Crane. Reporters gathered as news leaked of an arrest in the case.

Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley told reporters, “We have medical experts who will testify to what was found in the suspect’s car. Blood matching Bob Crane’s blood type, and human tissue.” This got everyone’s attention.

For the first time, it appeared, from the prosecution’s statements, that there was now strong physical evidence linking John Carpenter to the murder. If Bob Crane’s blood and tissue from his head were found in John Carpenter’s rental car there is no other plausible explanation than that John Carpenter was the killer.
