A New Boathouse along the Chicago River Turns the Motion of Rowing into an Instant Landmark

October 20, 2013

Few sights in sport are more stirring than eight rowers propelling a thin racing shell across the water. Legs drive forward. Arms pull backward. Oars carve through the water in perfect, V-shaped synchronization. It’s visual poetry—and in some cities, it extends to the buildings where rowers gather and their boats are stored and dried.

Philadelphia boasts Boathouse Row, a string of elegant Victorian boat clubs along the Schuylkill River, including one designed by the great Frank Furness. Outside Boston, along the Charles River, there’s the Community Rowing Boathouse, an exuberant contemporary structure that draws inspiration from such diverse sources as tobacco sheds and covered bridges.
