Forty-two

The plan was set and we were ready to move, most of us still buzzing about the earthquake. Anchors from various news outlets were in the streets getting reactions from anyone they could, but apparently not everyone had turned to their televisions, and calls came into the station from people worried that we’d just been hit by a terrorist attack.

Rudy and Tom Cantwell stood near the station’s front door. Tom’s outfit bore a striking resemblance to Benjamin’s, including a blue hoodie that covered his face nicely. Two uniformed officers waited in the lobby as well, ready to follow us to the house where we were taking Tom.

“Are we going to hold hands?” Tom asked with a smirk. His voice was deep and didn’t fit the childish appearance we’d managed to create.

“You’d love that.”

He laughed. “You don’t have sweaty hands do you? I hate sweaty hands.”

“No, my hands aren’t sweaty.”

“But they’re big as hell. Look at those things, they look like catcher’s mitts!”

“They fit my size.”

“Just don’t hold my whole hand, okay? This is weird enough as it is.”

“Okay, I won’t hold your whole hand.”

“Are you two ready?” Rudy asked. “Or are you going to keep fussing about hand size?”

“He started it,” I said.

Carl came over and said that he’d be ready to take Benjamin out of the back door once we were a couple of miles away.

“Okay, looks like everything’s set,” I said.

Rudy lowered his walkie-talkie and said that the units were set up at the house. I looked down at Tom and extended my hand. He rolled his eyes and held two of my fingers.

“You owe me big time, Jacob.”

I shook my head and we went through the front doors, Rudy walking ahead of us to block a clear view of Tom. I said a couple of things to make it appear as though I was engaged with Tom, like an adult would to a child, but I had to admit that knowing that a grown man was holding my two fingers was awkward.

The three of us got into Rudy’s car without a hitch, pulling out of the parking lot with the two uniformed officers behind us in their squad car. We believed that having a marked car behind us wouldn’t raise any red flags, especially given what the killers had attempted earlier that day.

“Jacob, you lied,” Tom said.

Rudy and I were in the front seats and Tom was in the back.

“What did I lie about?”

“You do have sweaty hands.”

That caused the three of us to laugh out loud. Once we were a couple of miles away from the station, I radioed Carl to get Benjamin to the safe house and that we’d regroup once the killers were caught. Besides the squad car following us, we also had two unmarked cars keeping track of us from a distance. I radioed the two unmarked cars and asked if we were being followed. They answered in the negative, which was a little concerning, but I still believed that the killers were watching us.
