ERIC COPE (LEFT) AND JAY PAGET OF GLORIOUS DIN. PHOTO COURTESY OF ERIC COPE.

Eric Cope: There was a guy from near the Bay Area called Tim Tanooka, who had this magazine called Ripper, and somehow I found it in a record store. I wrote to Tim, and he said, “Yeah, come down.” At that time, I was into Joy Division and Gang of Four and the Fall, but still I was into skinheads and Crass and all of that stuff, too. So I came to San Francisco, and I’m telling you, I was so excited. In Iowa, if you went to a club to see punk, it would be us and hardly anyone else. But when I came here, I was so excited to see all these punks and bands like Crucifix and Urban Assault and Flipper. It was an exciting time.29

Brandan Kearney: I first knew Eric Cope as this guy who would come up and try to sell you copies of Maximum Rocknroll at shows, and you’d say, “Get away from me—I don’t want that rag.”
