TWENTY NINE

Carter’s jaw kept dropping.

The more he found, the worse it got. He literally felt sick to his stomach.

He’d not been gone long for the workout, just as promised. Home by 2:30, he gave Mae a “See, I know how to tell time” look, to which she replied with a golf clap. He’d mentioned the three games he’d won. Bradford’s victory, notably, was not brought up. Over the next two hours he checked some items off the home list. Four inches of fresh snow needed to be blown out of the driveway. He’d long ago switched from shoveling as the primary mode of removal. Still, it took a certain amount of skill, a plan actually, to get the white stuff out of the way and not have it come back at you. Carter mouthed to himself that this was not his mess to clean up.

Overheard as he stepped back inside, Mae reminded him: neither were diapers.

“Dinner at 6,” she notified.

He’d walked upstairs imagining her enchiladas.

Now he wasn’t so sure he could eat.

The accounts were horrendous. Reality was worse.
