She saw the table first.

Laden with food––so much food, the table itself was nearly invisible––it took up most of the train car, making it difficult to miss. The long, rectangular slab looked like polished wood, but with a different grain than any she had ever seen on her Earth. It rested low to the floor, surrounded by piles of soft-looking pillows.

Alexis’s eyes went around to the people sitting there next.

She saw Jules and broke out in a grin.

Seeing the taut look in Jules’ eyes when she smiled back, Alexis felt her joy at seeing her friend instantly fade. Jules no longer wore the collar, and seemed in perfect health, but the look in her green eyes caused alarm bells to explode in Alexis’s mind.

She reached over her head for a sword…

Only to remember nothing was there.

Bringing her hand and arm back down slowly, she gritted her teeth, glancing around at the guns worn at the hips of the surrounding guards.

Then her eyes searched for Devin.

She found him in less than a second, sitting across from Jules.

He also lacked the collar, but looked even more tense than Jules.

His handsome face had hardened to a cold mask, his dark brown eyes glaring around to meet their group as they slowly filled that side of the train car.

Then his eyes found Cal.

Devin’s glare turned abruptly murderous.

“You motherfucker…” the werewolf growled.

Alexis frowned, glancing at Cal, but she wasn’t done mapping the threat.

She quickly scanned the remainder of the moving car.

Seeing the faces there, standing around the edges, she mostly absorbed expressions and demeanors.

Then, like Devin, she stopped on one face in particular.

The hunched, strangely rumpled-looking man from the stage overlooking Cal’s audience hall stood there.

Like he had the first time she noticed him in Cal’s palace, he looked her over like she was on a stripper pole in a see-through thong. Seeing her staring at him, he gave her one of his smarmy, noxious smiles. She saw his eyes go to her breasts then, like they’d done on that stage, and the expression on his face was almost exactly the one she remembered.

“What is this?” she asked Cal, without tearing her eyes off that bloated, blotchy face. “What is going on? Another game, my love?”

She said the last sarcastically, even as some part of her readied to fight.

She grew aware of everything around her, including the nearest weapon she might grab off one of the surrounding guards. She knew she might not get very far, given the collar still locked around her neck, but she was more than happy to see how many of them she could take down with her.

“What is this?” she growled, when the Traveler King didn’t answer.

When Cal remained silent, she turned her head, staring at him.

She watched as he continued to absorb the situation, his eyes scanning through the same crowd of faces that she just had.

It frustrated the hell out of her that she couldn’t tell if it was real.

She had no idea if his surprise at this
