Jesus clearly constitutes a special case. In the iconography, most newborns are swaddled in white and placed in rooms where white fabrics dominate: sheets, bedding, cushions, drapes. Mothers themselves are shown wearing white chemises, the color of purity and maternity. White follows green, which they would have worn prior to it as a sign of hope, especially hope for a successful pregnancy. Pregnant women are often portrayed in green in miniatures and panel paintings. Many chroniclers inform us that in the years 1238–39, in order to conceive his first child, a son if possible, Saint Louis made an effort to sleep for several consecutive nights with his young wife, Marguerite de Provence, in the “green bedroom” of the Île de la Cité palace. We do not know what this “green bedroom” was exactly, but we can guess that it was painted with foliage and greenery, plant motifs then fashionable in secular decor.138
