Chapter 11

“Where is she?” Doug demanded, keeping his voice low. He scanned the crowd, but still didn’t see Hannah among the gathered necromancers.

“Are you yelling at me?” Declan asked, his voice equally low.

“No, I’m venting. You’re handy.”

“Perhaps I should go stand over there.” He nodded to the far side of the patio, well away from the veranda where they currently stood.

Doug followed his nod, his gaze snagging on the empty pool. The pool hadn’t been used since he, Era, and Jake had swum almost a week ago. Apparently, poor Jake must have bragged it up too much with his mother, and she hadn’t allowed him to return—though she had suggested she would bring him to swim. However, her quest to find the perfect spa here in the Cincinnati area had taken precedence. And since Jake’s nanny had moved in, Hannah no longer had to look after Jake.

“My guess is that she’s intentionally late in order to make her entrance visible to those who weren’t so tastefully tardy,” Declan offered.

Doug sighed, forcing himself not to tug at his collar. He had requested this evening’s gathering to be summer casual, but to the necromancer crowd, that just meant no tuxedos or evening gowns. He, like every other man present, wore a suit, but the sun was dipping below the western horizon and taking the heat with it. Normally, a function like this would be held indoors, but with the renovations, he’d moved it outside. If there wasn’t so much tradition involved in naming an heir, he would have rented a more suitable venue.

“I haven’t thanked you for doing this,” Declan’s voice was so soft that Doug almost didn’t catch the words.

“This?”

“Kissing Hannah’s ass, and going so far as to name Jake heir.”

Doug glanced over. Declan kept surprising him, but then maybe Cora was right, how well did he really know his brother? With a five-year age difference, the bulk of their childhood interactions had been Doug following Declan around like a lost pup—much to Declan’s annoyance. And once they were old enough to truly get to know each other, Declan had married and moved away.

“Just do me a favor,” Declan continued. “Hurry up and have children of your own. If Jake is too old when you name a new heir—well, that never seems to go so well.”

“Unless something unforeseen happens, I have no intention of revoking my choice.”

Declan turned to stare at him.

“Yes, I’m doing this now to get Jake back in our lives, but I’m choosing him based on his own merit—or potential. I really think he’s going to be an amazing talent.”

Declan still looked like he didn’t know what to say, but a commotion near the patio doors drew their attention. Hannah and Jake had arrived.

“Looks like I’m on,” Declan muttered. “Wish me luck.”

Doug wanted to point out that he wasn’t married to her anymore, but like Doug, he had to continue to kiss her ass—if this was going to work.

“Good luck,” Doug answered, watching Hannah smile and greet those closest to her.
