Chapter 13
It wasn't long before we reached Seaside Haven Medical Center. Kitsune pulled into an empty spot, near the Pregnant and New Mother's section, and we stepped out of the car.
The coastal charm of the town was clear in the building's design, presenting a welcoming facade. Its white clapboard siding and vibrant window boxes, adorned with an array of blossoms, softened the clinical exterior. An iron sign, featuring an elegantly stylized cherry blossom tree in soothing hues, stood tall, announcing our arrival with a sense of warmth and reassurance.
Upon stepping inside, the modernity of the facility was immediately apparent. Well-lit corridors featured artwork and expansive windows that allowed the soft, natural light to flow in, creating an environment that felt comforting to both patients and staff. The gentle notes of instrumental music played in the background, adding to the overall tranquility.
In the reception area, a cheerful design welcomed visitors with open arms. Comfortable seating and a bubbling water fountain at its center created a soothing ambiance, a testament to the effort to ease any worries associated with hospital visits.
We made our way through the corridors, passing patient rooms designed to provide both comfort and breathtaking views of Cherry Blossom Bay and the coastal landscape. Pastel hues and tasteful decorations turned each room into a serene retreat, far removed from the clinical setting one might expect.
At the heart of Seaside Haven, the well-equipped emergency room and state-of-the-art surgical suites stood ready to serve the community. The hospital's dedication to Cherry Blossom Bay's well-being was obvious not just in its technological advancements but also in the compassion and skill of its medical staff.
"May I help you?" a pretty woman with red hair and thin-rimmed glasses asked from behind a desk. "Are you here to check in?" She finally pulled her dark eyes from the computer to look at us. "Oh. Detective Kitsune?"
"We're here to speak to Adrian Lancaster," he said.
"Oh. I don't know â"
"It's important, Karen."
She shifted her eyes over to me, and something akin to recognition flashed in them. They suddenly narrowed, and as her fingers flew across the keyboard, her typing sounded more aggressive than before. Which was strange, considering I had never seen her in my life.
"Even so, detective â"
"I'm not a detective anymore, Karen," Kitsune said, and though his voice was still nonchalant, I detected the subtlest of edges to it.
"Which means he doesn't have to see you at all."
Kitsune waited another moment. "I would appreciate it if you would call and ask if he'll speak to us," he said patiently.
Karen looked like she was going to argue. Now, she refused to look at me. Instead, she heaved a dramatic sigh. "Fine," she said. "But I can't promise anything."
She picked up the received and pressed a couple of buttons.
"Hello? Sorry to bother you, sir, but Kitsune is here to see you." A beat. "Yes, I told them that." She blinked, glancing over at me. "I don't know, some girl with pink hair and a charity store dress."
I crossed my arms over my chest and scowled at her, but she wasn't paying attention to me.
