Saving Others, Part Three: Moses Delivering Women (2:11–22)

Many feminist readers understand the story to end with the arrival on the scene of the adult Moses. The women, having delivered the boy Moses to the safety of a privileged childhood in Pharaoh’s house, vanish from the scene permanently (except for Miriam). To some feminist readers their literal disappearance symbolizes the disturbing reality that the women are merely tools of patriarchy, brought on the scene to rescue a baby so that a man could go on to the greater glory of liberating Israel.45 But much depends on where one thinks the story ends. If we see the scene in 2:11–22 as part of the larger story told in Exodus, then a different pattern emerges. Having been rescued by women, Moses then rescues a group of women in turn, so that instead of seeing the disappearance and ultimate subordination of women as foregrounded by the story, we may perceive a pattern of reciprocal deliverances that once again cross both gender and ethnic lines, and that finally culminate in God’s deliverance of Israel.
