chapter five

Toby glanced at Patricia with eyes that could kill. His attention swiftly moved to Ben and traveled to Susie. Susie was nibbling on a donut like a nervous mouse while Foster worked on a cup of coffee. Patricia noticed that Toby didn’t look at Karan. Why? Were Toby and Karan somehow connected? And why did Toby walk his eyes past Trent without any concern? Did Toby consider Trent to be more of a nuisance than a threat? Most likely, Patricia thought, taking a sip of coffee. Toby was a large man—powerful and deadly. A little squirt like Trent was of no concern to a man like Toby. Still, Trent was a cop, and cops were connected to a network. Patricia seriously doubted Toby wanted to attract more flies to the honey bowl.

“Well, this storm sure put a damper on today, didn’t it?” Patricia asked in an annoyed tone, deciding to latch on to the part of a dimwit. While it was true she had showed her true detective skills the night before, Patricia hoped her change of attitude would be accepted. After all, only Ben and Foster had really seen her detective skills in play. Perhaps Toby and Karan, if they were informed by Foster that a Nancy Drew–type character was present, would assume the information that was given to them was…unstable. “Boy, is my boss mad too.”

“Enough with your boss already,” Karan snapped at Patricia. She locked her eyes on Trent. “When can we leave the kitchen?”

“When Chief Winchester calls me,” Trent replied, eating a chocolate-covered donut that likely would cause more pimples. “Chief Winchester told me to keep all the guests in the kitchen, so, uh, just relax and have a donut.”

“I don’t eat processed foods,” Karan informed Trent, adding an extra layer of ice to her voice. “I want to continue with my work.”

“Work?” Patricia asked, pretending to sound confused.

“I’m a paranormal investigator, remember?” Karan snapped. “I didn’t drive all this way to be sidelined by an unfortunate murder.” Karan looked at Ben. “If allowed, I can distinguish the truth about this manor from fiction and help you establish a credible reputation. When I arrived you put up resistance, but as I stated, if you would just allow me to examine this manor and conduct an investigation—”

“No,” Ben answered in a stern tone. “My answer now is the same as yesterday.”

Ben didn’t tell me he was having trouble with Karan, Patricia thought as a cloud of worry entered her mind. Karan seems very adamant to continue her work. Toby doesn’t seem very supportive, either. Toby had his head turned and was looking at Karan with harsh eyes. What is the deal between those two? Maybe it’s time to find out.

“Speaking of work, maybe I can salvage my job,” Patricia stated in a hopeful voice. “Mr. Ells, you’re a college professor, right? You teach archaeology? I’m sure you must have some interesting stories to tell about your travels.”

Toby rotated his eyes back to Patricia. “I don’t give interviews.
