Chapter 18

When Sara got back to the shop, Bob Baron said, “Travis came around here looking for you. He said to call him.”

“Thanks for delivering the message.” Sara picked up the oboe she’d been working on and started to fit the keys over it. “Grandpa isn’t back yet?”

“No. How was the funeral?” asked her father. “Was it a big turn out?”

“It was a funeral. Jeremy’s sister came in from out of town. She delivered the eulogy. Not much of a crowd. There were a few of his employees, his card group, and a building inspector he hired as a consultant.”

Scott said, “How was Mandy? Upset?”

“Not about Jeremy being dead. She saw Tamara Berns wearing her dead mother’s necklace. She’s more convinced than ever Jeremy killed her mother and gave the necklace to Tamara. Or, that they worked together to kill her mother. Mandy says her mother never took that necklace off and when they found her body, she wasn’t wearing it.”

Scott said, “That’s awful. Did Mandy go to the police?”

“She wants more information. Can you come by this evening? Mandy and I are planning a pow wow and we need your help.”

Grandpa came in and sat at his bench. “Paltry turnout, wasn’t it? I don’t want a funeral if that’s how many people you think will show up. It’s embarrassing.”

“You’ll be dead. You won’t know the difference,” said her father.

Grandpa said, “Did you catch the grieving mistress? I told you he had something going on the side.”

“Do you know how long she’s been in town?” said Sara.

“No, but I heard him say something the last time we met at Jeremy’s for cards. He said he wasn’t gonna be stuck paying for a kid he knew wasn’t his.”

“Tamara’s baby? Is that who he was talking about?”

“I guess.”

“When did you hear this? Was it on the phone?”

“She came to the door the night we played at his house. He went out to the porch to talk, but the window was open so we heard everything. The woman was piping mad.”

“Tamara was mad at him? A few days before he was murdered?”

“Yeah. And today she’s all misty eyed and crying like her heart is broken.”

“How did he react? Did he say anything when he came back inside?’

“He guzzled a can of beer and we got back to playing.”

Scott said, “What time are we meeting at your house, Sara? Looks like we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

After work, Scott and Mandy showed up at Sara’s with a large pizza and a bottle of wine.

Mandy said, “I went by the catering company to talk to the people who worked the reception. One of the waitresses says she spoke to Tamara and they were talking about babies because the waitress has one the same age as Tamara’s kid.”

“And?”

“And, the kids were both born in the same month. They are six months old. That means Tamara’s baby was conceived fifteen months ago. We can find out what was going on at the time. Jeremy was living here, married to my mother.
