Chapter 15

Sunlight shone through the window as Ana lay in bed at the Sullivan house. It rested on her skin and left her feeling warm and cosy. She stretched, lying against the fresh sheets and watching as little dust particles fell in front of the rays and fluttered in the air. With a smile, she sat up in the sheets and threw her legs over the side of the bed. The night before, she had rummaged through some of Abby’s clothes and found a pair of pyjama shorts and a black tank top that read, I’d curse you, but I don’t want to waste the herbs, in white cursive over the front.

She pulled her phone from where it was resting on the vanity table to check the time. It was after 10:00, and she blinked at the screen, a sense of panic coming over her before she realised she didn’t have to be up early anyway. There were no deadlines, no meetings, and no priorities until the end of the month. She never had this amount of time to herself, and as she sat on the chair at the vanity, she recognised how much she had missed a slower paced life.

After putting her phone back on the table, she smelt something sweet drifting under the door, making her stomach grumble loudly. She stood from the chair and opened the door, walking into the hall and smiling at the soft sound of rock music that came from the kitchen below her.

Coming into the kitchen, Ana smiled widely as she leaned against the door and folded her arms across her chest, resting her head on the wood. Ezra was standing at the stove. His hair stuck out at all angles, and he was wearing a pair of loose-fitting grey sweatpants and a white T-shirt. Cooking utensils and flour covered the kitchen counters and the top of the island, with milk spilled and a bag of chocolate chips tipped over. He was singing to himself and nodding his head to the music, and when he finally turned with a plate in his hands, he jumped in surprise and scrambled to set them down.

“Jesus Christ! Don’t sneak up on people like that, Davenport. You gave me a heart attack!” Ezra exclaimed with a frown. He tried dusting his shirt off, but he had flour and batter all over it.

“I wasn’t sneaking around. It’s not my fault you were in the zone. Nice singing voice, by the way.” Ana laughed and pushed herself off the door, walking to him and reaching to wipe the flour caked on his nose. “What the hell are you doing, anyway?”

Ezra shooed her hand away and moved to turn the oven off, then he reached inside with a hand towel and pulled out a tray of freshly baked croissants.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he said, setting them down and moving to the stack of pancakes and waffles he had made and placed them on the clean side of the table.

“So, you opened a bakery?” Ana laughed.
