My lips were permanently thinned, my eyes glued to Special Agent Bronstad and the doctor. They hadn’t done anything interesting, which wasn’t surprising since they were working. I still had my doubts, though, and the best way to find out things about a person? Follow them around. So here I was, a half hour from my Cas, spying on Ryan and the douchebag.

I really wanted to punch him again, but I held the urge at bay because honestly, the rest of them weren’t so bad. They seemed to treat Cas with respect, and I could already see a difference in her. She seemed to light up more, her luscious pink lips curling into a smile and her freckled cheeks flushed whenever she caught one of them glancing at her. I pushed back the little darts of jealousy that prickled and the whisper that I should be the only one she looked at that way. Face it, Ric. As much you love her, you will never be enough. Not like this.

Mason, on the other hand, well, he could be hit by a car, and I wouldn’t be broken up about it. Cas might have been right this morning saying we’d accepted that we could never be anything more, but that didn’t mean I had to stand by all invisible and let someone mistreat her. I loved her, and I planned on protecting her for as long as she lived, and after that? Then it would be my turn to finally be with her.

“Wait,” Mason stopped in the middle of his conversation with Ryan, his shoulders rolling back. His eyes narrowed, and his head tilted slightly. “We aren’t alone.”

“What?” Ryan asked, glancing around in confusion.

Mason leaned forward, his tattooed hand resting against Ryan’s stomach as he whispered too low for me to hear. My brow cocked at the intimate touch between them, the team leader’s fingers tracing lightly against Ryan’s dress shirt. They were much more touchy-feely when they were alone. Well, as alone as they can be with a ghost following them. My lips thinned even more. Cas better not just be a toy for the two of them to spice up their sex life.

“Ah, got it.” Ryan turned slightly, Mason walking away without looking back.

What are you two up to? I wondered. As soon as the doctor was alone, he started to talk.

“Hello, Ric, I know you’re there. Any particular reason you’re following us instead of Casper?”

Whoop-de-do, they figured it out, I huffed with a frown. Not only did Cas have to like them, they had to be more observant than the average supe. I pushed away the petty thought and focused on Cas. Tugging lightly on the thin anchor between us, I tested how much energy she had. Noting her levels were higher than they were this morning, I pulled, siphoning some of the energy to help me become visible. Ryan’s eyes widened slightly despite his lax stance.

“You’re a smart guy, Dr. Tanner, why don’t you tell me?” I challenged.
