“Wait, a second. How can you work for the Bourbon Association and not drink bourbon?” Gemini slapped her hand on the table in a fit of giggles.

The evening’s dinner seemed to be the perfect salve after an afternoon of opening up our deepest wounds and airing them. The entire table of Gemini’s guests was fun, hilarious, and such a delight to be around. Even Jasper appeared to have come out of his shell.

“I’m not a big drinker.” I shrugged. I felt the heat rising on my cheeks as the whole table’s focus landed on me.

“You went to U.K.” Jasper turned, his voice raised a half octave.

I had no idea how he knew.

“Because they have an awesome basketball team—and honestly, if you grow up in Kentucky, it’s like written in your DNA you attend.”

“I don’t know Jasper,” Emmett pointed his thumb in my direction, “as the owner of one of the best bourbons I’ve personally ever tasted. How is this possible?”

“Duane!” Finn called to the chef, who approached with another round of dessert, “Could you please ask your bartender to bring a tasting flight of bourbons for the table?”

“Ooooh, looks like Finn has decided today is the day to school you little grasshopper.” Emmett hooted.

“If we could get Lakshmi V, a 1792, the Basil Hayden’s, the Old Forester, and the Knob Creek–if you don’t have enough of those for the table, we can do a Woodford, the Four Roses small batch, or a Russell’s Reserve.” Jasper rattled off more bourbons than I thought humanly possible to know.

While I didn’t technically drink bourbons, I at least knew who my clients were and who the up and comers were. Jasper’s knowledge of high quality bourbon at all price points was impressive. The rest of the table seemed equally fascinated, some of them even referring to the back of the spirits' menu to do their own research.

“Let’s start with the Knob Creek.” He held up the miniature sipping glass. I thought so the rest of the table knew which he selected, but instead he brought it to my lips. “Knob Creek is considered a gateway bourbon. It’s affordable, accessible, straightforward.”

“It burns,” Amelia hissed as she cleared her glass.

“Definitely not my favorite,” Gemini agreed. “This one is probably better mixed with something like a julep or a Manhattan.”

“What do you think?” Jasper asked.

He was so close to me. I could feel his breath warm against my cheek. His nearness tickled up my spine, insinuated itself into my circulatory system.

“It’s too intense,” I told him. “The oakiness is overwhelming.”

The chef placed a dessert in front of us. Jasper gathered some of the whipped cream on his spoon and fed it to me.

“This will cut down on the bitterness in the back of your throat.”

While I tried to cleanse my palate, he picked up the next glass.

“Smell the inside of your glass from the Knob Creek. You can smell the barrel, the oakiness, the grassy scent of the trees. It presents very clean and fresh. As Gemini said, a perfect mixing bourbon.
