THIRTEEN
Roman and I followed the wind to the edge of the forest. I called to it again, energizing it. The wind sailed into the valley and down the hillside, blowing the tall grass.
âWhere is it going?â I asked as we hurried to follow.
âItâs heading into wolf territory.â
âIf you want to hang back, you can. Iâll go alone.â
âNot a chance.â
We climbed down into a shallow ravine. Roman held me steady as I slipped on gravel.
The wind swirled around a bush that hung onto the side of the slope.
âSomething is going on with that bush,â I said.
Roman walked closer to it and looked around. âThereâs a hole that goes down. The bush hides it from view.â He glanced at me, eyeing my hips and shoulders.
I shook my head. âIâm not going into a hole in the ground.â
âI can lower you inside.â
âThere could be snakes.â
He knelt near the hole. Taking his phone, he flattened himself on the ground and reached down, using the camera to snap pictures.
He then sat up and flipped through the pictures. âDoesnât look like any snakes are down there.â He handed it to me to look. âI donât smell anything either. Just Jinxâs lingering scent.â
âThere are too many things down there to know for sure.â
Jinx had been smart to make his hiding spot in wolf territory. No wolf could get into a small space like this. And no one else would venture this far unless they wanted a wolf escort back home.
âI might have another issue,â I said. âIâm not claustrophobic, but in spaces like this, I can be.â
âIâll pull you up right away if you have any problems.â
Since my curiosity won, I sat on the edge of the hole and dangled my feet.
âReady?â he asked.
When I nodded, he wrapped his hands under my arms.
âSorry,â I said. âIâm sweaty.â
âYouâre fine. Scoot down. I wonât let you fall.â
Soon I was fully dangling over the hole, held only by Roman.
As he lowered me inside, I glanced up to find his face haloed by the sunlight shining through the opening. His brown hair tickled the corners of his dark blue eyes.
My shoes hit the ground. âIâm down.â
âCome to this spot if you need to get out,â he said. âI wonât move.â
Taking out my phone, I turned on the flashlight and scanned the inside of the bedroom sized space. There were so many items crammed inside it would take an entire afternoon to lift them out. The only book I spotted was plastic wrapped and stamped with the libraryâs logo. Why would Jinx want a handbook of minerals and metals?
I handed it to Roman.
âThis isnât the book Iâm looking for,â he said.
âI know. I think itâs the one Nesta needs. I wouldnât want her to get on Pickeringâs bad side. What else was missing?â
âMy book,â Roman said.
âThereâs something else someone was looking for.â
While I wanted to take everything back to the station for people to collect, there was no way to carry it all. Iâd have to come back.
âDo you see my book?â Roman asked.
