THIRTEEN

Roman and I followed the wind to the edge of the forest. I called to it again, energizing it. The wind sailed into the valley and down the hillside, blowing the tall grass.

“Where is it going?” I asked as we hurried to follow.

“It’s heading into wolf territory.”

“If you want to hang back, you can. I’ll go alone.”

“Not a chance.”

We climbed down into a shallow ravine. Roman held me steady as I slipped on gravel.

The wind swirled around a bush that hung onto the side of the slope.

“Something is going on with that bush,” I said.

Roman walked closer to it and looked around. “There’s a hole that goes down. The bush hides it from view.” He glanced at me, eyeing my hips and shoulders.

I shook my head. “I’m not going into a hole in the ground.”

“I can lower you inside.”

“There could be snakes.”

He knelt near the hole. Taking his phone, he flattened himself on the ground and reached down, using the camera to snap pictures.

He then sat up and flipped through the pictures. “Doesn’t look like any snakes are down there.” He handed it to me to look. “I don’t smell anything either. Just Jinx’s lingering scent.”

“There are too many things down there to know for sure.”

Jinx had been smart to make his hiding spot in wolf territory. No wolf could get into a small space like this. And no one else would venture this far unless they wanted a wolf escort back home.

“I might have another issue,” I said. “I’m not claustrophobic, but in spaces like this, I can be.”

“I’ll pull you up right away if you have any problems.”

Since my curiosity won, I sat on the edge of the hole and dangled my feet.

“Ready?” he asked.

When I nodded, he wrapped his hands under my arms.

“Sorry,” I said. “I’m sweaty.”

“You’re fine. Scoot down. I won’t let you fall.”

Soon I was fully dangling over the hole, held only by Roman.

As he lowered me inside, I glanced up to find his face haloed by the sunlight shining through the opening. His brown hair tickled the corners of his dark blue eyes.

My shoes hit the ground. “I’m down.”

“Come to this spot if you need to get out,” he said. “I won’t move.”

Taking out my phone, I turned on the flashlight and scanned the inside of the bedroom sized space. There were so many items crammed inside it would take an entire afternoon to lift them out. The only book I spotted was plastic wrapped and stamped with the library’s logo. Why would Jinx want a handbook of minerals and metals?

I handed it to Roman.

“This isn’t the book I’m looking for,” he said.

“I know. I think it’s the one Nesta needs. I wouldn’t want her to get on Pickering’s bad side. What else was missing?”

“My book,” Roman said.

“There’s something else someone was looking for.”

While I wanted to take everything back to the station for people to collect, there was no way to carry it all. I’d have to come back.

“Do you see my book?” Roman asked.
