KEITH SHOULDER-BUMPED Caleb as they walked back to his home. “I told you you’d like Jason once you had a chance to get to know him a little.”
“You did, and you’re right. He’s very sweet, though a little overly protective of your bond. Doesn’t he get that the bite aside, you’re already mated?”
“Sadly, no. I’ve told him. Prince Sasha has told him. But it seems his past boyfriends weren’t the kind of men he should have been dating.” Keith frowned. He didn’t like to think of Jason’s past with others, both because Jason was his now and because he hated anything that would cause his mate pain. “None of them took their dating seriously.”
Caleb nodded. “That would make it harder for him, especially since he’s human. I don’t know how they tolerate all the uncertainty and broken matings.” Caleb paused after he stepped inside the house after Keith. “Isn’t that hard on you too, though? The idea that Jason won’t be as invested in the mate-bond as you?”
He shook his head as he turned to face Caleb. “No. Not if you could see Jason as I do. One, he’s made loyal. Two, he’s… I don’t know how to explain it, but I think humans do feel the pull, though maybe not as strongly as we do. And three, I think if a human gets to the point of willingly allowing us to give them the mating bite, they’re pretty much set on what they want and will be true to their mate.”
“Yeah, that would be a big thing for a human to agree to. Can you do that with him without risking his life?”
The explosive breath that burst from Keith said more about his worry than any words could. “There has to be a way, but I don’t know what it is yet. I can’t go to my father about Jason,” he explained and trembled for a moment as he thought of how well his father was going to react once he found out about Jason. “He considers humans to be dangerous and to be lesser creatures. Kind of like how many humans view wild animals.”
“Sure, but that’s so limited. Humans don’t know better about wolves and such, but we know better about humans. I mean, I know he’s your dad, but….” Caleb shifted from foot to foot.
“I’m not upset with you, and you’re right. It is a very limited and messed-up attitude to have. I’ve yet to win that argument with my father, though. He doesn’t approve of Taylor and me living here for that very reason.” Well, that was part of it. He didn’t want to tell Caleb how manipulative and controlling his father was. That would go from working behind the scenes in hope to change things in the future to outright disrespect of his alpha—a line he wouldn’t cross if he could help it.
“Glad. I don’t want to offend, just understand. And thank you for inviting me into your home. Many others wouldn’t do that, especially with their young around.
