Fifteen minutes later, as we stood next to the baggage claim, we spotted Jo. She was wearing short jean shorts and a blue ‘‘Surfside High’’ T-shirt. Her long black hair covered her shoulders.

I waved and she ran over, giving me a hug. “Liz!”

“Hey, Jo, it’s so good to see you in person,” I said. Even just having her within arm’s reach lifted a weight off my shoulders.

Jo smiled and waved at Clark, then looked at me expectantly. “Oh, Jo, this is Clark, my friend.” I said ‘’friend’' hesitantly. “Clark, this is Jordyn.”

“Good to finally meet you,” Clark said.

Jo was looking curiously at his cast. “You’re wondering about my leg,” he said.

I shot her a warning look. “You don’t have to say,”

“No, it’s okay. It was a shark attack.”

Jo’s eyes widened in surprise. “Wow, you’re lucky to get off with just a broken leg.”

“Yeah, I—“ Before he could finish, there was a deep rumble, followed by shaking.

“EARTHQUAKE,” someone yelled.

“Grab Jo and get out of here,” I screamed, then ran off. Caleb was striking again.
