CHAPTER 13

It was nearing dinnertime when Joe and Jeremy left Bella’s Dream. Anna did some paperwork before feeding Casper and heading home for the night. Somehow, that cat always seemed to be there when she opened the back-alley door to feed him. And yet, he also seemed to be everywhere else in town.

She left Bella’s Dream early to go grocery shopping, since the fridge was down to baking soda and water. She made a quiche and some rice for dinner, then she boiled water for some hot chocolate, watched a movie, and went to bed.

At 3:00 in the morning, Anna was awakened by the sound of her phone ringing. She sat up and waited for the cobwebs to clear from her mind. That can’t be good. She grabbed the phone from the nightstand and looked at the screen. It was Ava.

“Hello? Ava?” she answered.

“Anna, I’m so sorry to bother you in the middle of the night, but I just got a call from the police. One of the neighbors happened to be awake and saw someone breaking into my house. I know it’s a lot to ask, but the police want me to come down to see if anything is missing. I told them that I didn’t have anything valuable in the house, but Detective Doyle asked if I’d come, anyway. I’m a little nervous to go alone.”

“Of course. I’ll meet you there in five minutes.” Anna sleepily climbed out of her warm bed and threw on the jeans she had been wearing the day before. She drove past the cove to Mile Long Beach and parked on the street in front of Charlie’s car. As she got out, her gaze was drawn to Daniel’s house.

He waved from his front porch, and she walked in his direction.

“Hi, Daniel,” Anna said. “What are you doing outside this time of night?”

Before he could answer, the door behind him opened, and Wanda stepped outside.

Anna smiled. So, that’s why Wanda hadn’t been home as much lately. She had been spending time with her husband.

“What brings the two of you outside on this cool evening?” Anna asked.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I came out for some fresh air,” Daniel said. “That’s when I heard some activity at the Grants’ house and called the police.”

“I’m sure Ava will be very grateful. What did you hear?”

“A car pulled up at about 2:30 and parked in the driveway. I watched from the front porch until I heard a crashing sound. Then I called the police. By the time they arrived, the person had fled.”

“I wonder what he or she could have taken, or could have been looking for,” Anna said.

“The real question is, what brings you here?”

“Do you even have to ask, Daniel?” Wanda said.

He chuckled. “Oh, that’s right. Anna has her sleuthing hat on again.”

“When the police notified Ava of the break in, she called me and asked if I’d come and lend some moral support.”

“And see if you can learn something that would point to Donovan Reed’s killer,” Wanda added.
