Chapter 8

“So-called ‘therapists’ like Hermann Geiss are nothing more than a disgrace to the mental health field. Therapists are not allowed to solicit clients—in any capacity—and he was so blatantly disregarding the dictates of the state licensure board, I was actually shocked at his brazenness. The mental health field can be enough of a minefield as it is, so we certainly don’t need someone like Geiss mucking up the waters.”

Piper and Kennedy were sitting with Caren Linsly and Ophelia Pittman on the outside patio of Seashells, a popular local bar and restaurant in downtown Whimsy, talking about Hermann Geiss. The two women had a glass of wine in front of them, while Piper joined Kenn in having a beer, and the mood was serious, though relaxed. Happy hour was over, the dinner crowd was just straggling in, and there were huge fans keeping everything cool, despite the blistering late August heat. Fortunately, they had plenty of privacy in the comfortable atmosphere to talk.

Now, Caren continued with her mini tirade. The dance movement therapist was a pretty woman with dark blonde hair and light blue-gray eyes, her lithe, five-five frame clearly showing her devotion to dance. Taking a sip of her wine, she said, “When I found out from my client that her boyfriend had been directly solicited by Geiss, I was on the phone to the licensure board immediately. Apparently, though, he retained his license even though he wasn’t allowed to practice for a year, according to the terms of the disciplinary action.”

Ophelia Pittman chimed in, throwing her head back and chortling. “It’s no wonder he’d had to resort to those kinds of sleazy tactics to find clients, though, considering he had been massacred years earlier—in front of God and everybody—at a fairly important mental health therapy conference. By a student, no less…my girl, Alyssa Riker. Caren is four years younger than me, five years younger than Alyssa, so regrettably, she missed it. I was lucky enough to be there, and I’m here to tell you, it was damn near legendary what she did to that piece of shit. Excuse my language.”

Waving Ophelia’s words away, Piper said, “Lys would have loved to have been with us tonight and wanted to make sure we told you she said hello, but she had a conflict, unfortunately.” After Piper took a swallow of her beer, she rested her glass on the table. “Like I said on the phone, Caren, I wanted to make sure I understood the altercation between you and Geiss correctly, and that I had the details accurate. I also wanted to get Ophelia’s input on him if she had any. The three of you are only the creative therapists in Whimsy, which seems to be where Geiss’s issues lie, so I’m trying to make sure there isn’t more to the story than what I already know. Kennedy very kindly offered to come with me to meet with you, so you wouldn’t think I was some kind of creepy stalker.”

The two women laughed.
