12. Meeting

Shawn was still on the phone, pacing small circles after I’d showered off the sweat, gotten dressed, and made myself dry toast. I brought him out a cup of coffee, mostly so I could eavesdrop on what he might be saying.

“Yeah, I know. Totally last minute, but do you think you can swing it? Excellent! Perfect. And yes, I trust you to know what she’d like. And if she doesn’t, well, good luck with that.” Shawn laughed, then grinned when he saw me coming. “I gotta run, man. You’re a lifesaver.” He hung up and tucked his cell in his back pocket.

“September 4th, 2019,” he said, beaming.

I blinked a few times, trying to brain what day of the week that was. “Wait. That’s a Wednesday. Are you saying we’re getting married on a Wednesday?”

“Hump day.” He wiggled his eyebrows up and down.

“Who gets married on a Wednesday!” I laughed despite myself.

“No one. Zero people. Which is why I could find all the vendors we’ll need. Including your brother, who is doing the flowers. He’ll know what you like, right?”

“Oh my God. You told him we were getting married?”

“Was that supposed to be a secret?”

“No. I just... I hadn’t told him yet. Or my mom. I haven’t told anyone yet. Except for Annabelle.”

“She’ll be there. She’s going to be your maid of honor. Her twins are going to be the ring bearers. Hank’s got the dual stroller fired up and ready to go. I haven’t gotten ahold of, Janice yet,” he said, pulling out his phone again to start texting, “but I’m sure she could pull her daughter out of school for the day to be the flower girl—”

I paused his assault on his phone with a kiss. He tucked his phone into his pocket and wrapped his arms around me to deepen the embrace. This was it. All I ever needed. I didn’t need a fancy wedding, an expensive dress, or a flower girl... just him.

“What was that for?” he asked when we reluctantly came up for air.

“I just felt like kissing you.”

He grinned up at me, spinning me around with him until I was giggling like a schoolgirl. “You can kiss me any time you want,” he said, “and anywhere you want.”

I knew that he was joking around, but I looked down at his crotch anyway.

“And, with that look, I’m heading to work before I ruin our wedding night.” He sighed, taking a huge step away from me.

After he left for the day, I set about making the bed and doing the breakfast dishes, then I checked in on Annabelle. She was still doing fine with the mother-in-law, and by “fine” I mean, she hadn’t kicked her out yet.

I wanted to call Skylar to talk about the wedding to try to feel out his opinion on the matter, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that conversation yet. Instead, I did something that surprised me. I called the hospital and set up an appointment to see Ms.
