10. Room Service

While I was in the bathroom, I took a hot shower to collect my thoughts after such a whirlwind of a day. I had started the morning thinking I would be settling into a boring yet stable life with Dwayne and ended it with a man I’d only known a handful of hours but already felt like I knew better than the man I’d lived with for years. That was impossible, of course. What I had with Shawn was an infatuation mixed with my abject fear of being alone. Nothing more.

Once the morning came, we’d both come to our senses. I’d make the appropriate cancellations. I’d take the week to lick my wounds and find a new place to live, then return to work the following Monday and pretend that the whole town didn’t look at me with the same pathetic eyes as I turned on myself.

In the light of day, we’d both realize how foolish this whole idea was. Or maybe I wouldn’t even need to have the conversation with him at all. He might save me the effort by slipping out during the night. That was what most guys did. Over the years, it had become a game. I’d lie awake, waiting for the moment the guy would bail. No one ever made it past 3:00 a.m. Maybe Shawn would make it to 3:05.

With my hair still in a towel, I emerged from the bathroom. I expected Shawn to be waiting for me on the bed with the remote in hand or something. Instead, he was at the door. His upper body obscured from view as he spoke in hushed tones to the person I presumed was delivering our room service. My stomach grumbled in anticipation. I was about to ask what he got when I heard what appeared to be a very annoyed woman in the hall.

“What am I doing here? I work here, asshole. What are you doing here?”

My ears perked up. That sounded like a jealous ex if I ever heard one.

“Would you keep your voice down?” Shawn scolded. “Look, I’m sorry to be rude, but this isn’t a great time for me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry my existence in the world seems to be an inconvenience to you. Maybe I should disappear like you did?”

“Hannah, look, we can talk about this later, okay?”

“Did I hit a nerve?” the woman spat. “Don’t like to be reminded of the mess you left when you decided I wasn’t good enough for you anymore?”

I froze. He was talking to an ex. An ex he'd left. Seemingly without any warning. Why were all men the same?

Shawn took a step back then, almost as though he wanted to make sure I was still in the bathroom. We locked eyes. The guilt on his face was all the confirmation I needed. He could never be trusted with my heart. While it hurt more than it should, it was good to know.

“Hey, honey. I didn't see you there,” Shawn said weakly.

“Honey?” Hannah asked through the door.
