Getting ready for the party later that night was nerve wracking, only because I was supposed to meet Hugh there and I didn’t know how I would act around him. I was still mad at him, and yet for someone stupid reason I still wanted to impress him. The internal conflict had eaten at me most of the afternoon.

Originally the plan had been to dress up for the party, but once I discovered how much I sucked at walking in high heels and how sore I still was from falling in them the day before, I quickly changed my mind. Instead, I wore a black t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, but I added my long cardigan over the top in place of my usual hoodie.

“I’m ready to go,” I announced. “Are you four ready?”

I looked around. Everyone else looked cuter than I did – except maybe Alba. She had refused Holly’s fashion advice, and while she had agreed to exchange her sweatpants for jeans, she still wore a sweatshirt. She did, however, claim it was an upgrade because it wasn’t a Hanes brand sweatshirt. Sweets wore the new coral blouse her sister Peach had given her for Christmas. Jax wore what she usually wore, and Holly had picked a slinky dress with cut-out shoulders and heels for herself.

Alba stood up and looked at Holly. “You’re going to freeze your butt off in that skimpy little dress.”

Holly giggled. “The thought of the man I’m going to find tonight will keep me warm.”

We all rolled our eyes. Jax, Sweets, and Alba slipped on their winter coats and gloves.

“Aren’t you two going to wear a coat?” Jax asked.

I shook my head. “Nah, I’ll be fine.”

“Ditto. Why would I go to the trouble of wearing my new dress if I’m just going to cover it up with a big ole coat?”

“Whatever,” said Alba gruffly. “So we’re ready? Let’s go.”

“Ok. How are we going to pull this off?” I asked. “Sorceress Stone is guaranteed to see us tromping through the school if we go out through the front door.”

“How else are we supposed to get to the car?” asked Holly.

“Well. Jax, Alba, and I can’t go out through the front door,” I said as a plan began to form in my mind. “How about the three of us go through the tunnels to the boy’s building, and you two move the car to the Warner Hall parking lot and pick us up there?”

Alba nodded. “It’s the only way.”

Jax wrung her hands nervously. “I don’t feel good about this, girls. We got away with sneaking out the other day, but I feel like our luck can’t hold out much longer.”

Alba put a hand on Jax’s shoulder. “You worry too much, Shorty.”

“Yeah, Jax. There’s no way Stone’s finding out.”

Jax shrugged wearily. “Fine,” she said slowly.

“What do you think Sweets? Can you pick us up in the other parking lot?” I asked.

Sweets looked around nervously. “If we get busted does that mean that I’m in trouble for aiding the enemy?”

“The enemy?” Alba asked with a laughed.
