CHAPTER THIRTEEN

MAISIE

My hips had a little extra sway to them as I left Connor’s booth and made my way to the storeroom. There wasn’t anything I needed to fetch from the room, but I needed a minute alone to compose myself. The hand Connor had held still tingled as I closed the storeroom door behind me. Pressing my back to the cool wood, I closed my eyes, my ponytail resting against the door. The drumming of my heart pounded against my ribcage. This was too much. After all these years, here he was, larger than life . . . and he remembered me.

With an excited squeal bubbling up from my belly, I let the sound ring out in the deserted room as I stepped away from the door and spun around with my arms held wide. Thank goodness I was alone because I must have looked like an idiot with a grin so wide my face hurt.

Flopping down onto the stool that was used to stand on to reach the top shelves, I pressed my hand to my chest and willed my heartbeat to slow. My God he was good-looking. He’d been cute the last time I’d seen him, looking older than his twelve years, but boy oh boy, had he had a major glow-up. The man was built, with broad shoulders and arms that pulled tight against the T-shirt beneath the hoodie, showing off impressive biceps with the slightest movement. His chest filled out his shirt perfectly then cut in toward his waist. What I would give to see what else he had to offer.

His blond hair was a little long, but he could wear it any way and pull it off. But it was his eyes that had me mesmerized, the golden flecks taking me back to the lake house and reminding me how he had stolen my heart.

And his scent. I let out a guttural groan. His unique, masculine scent smelled like . . . home. There was no other way to describe it. It was his and yet it was so familiar as if I’d been seeking it all my life. As soon as I’d gotten within a few feet of him my body had reacted. Every sense was on high alert it was both invigorating, sending my blood racing, but also the most soothing, welcoming feeling I’d ever known.

The hand he’d been holding—the hand I may never wash again—went to my lips. It was the closest I’d come to reliving our kiss since it had happened.

I wonder if he remembers that little peck?

I’d thought myself so bold and brave to step up to his dad’s car and kiss him through the open window. I had no idea how he’d respond. He could have pushed me away, screwed up his face, and swiped any trace of me from his lips. But instead, he’d leaned in, allowing me to take what I’d wanted, cementing that memory for a lifetime—it was my first kiss, and it was perfect. When I’d stepped back, the butterflies in my stomach were a tornado of nerves.
