Luke followed Mrs. Teaser into her kitchen, listening to her chatter on about her irritating drippy faucet, all the while trying to keep from stepping on any paws or tails.

“Thank you so much for coming over, Luke. I don’t get around like I used to, and having somebody handy to call on is such a blessing.”

“No problem. That outfit looks nice on you.”

She blushed with pleasure.

Cats lounged everywhere, on the floor, on the chairs around the table, even on the counter. Lionel, the cat who tried to eat everything in sight, sat in the corner of the room eyeing the bag Luke held, the end of his tail flicking.

He set his toolbox on the floor and turned to Mrs. Teaser. “You won’t need to use the water here at the sink, will you?”

“I sure won’t, Luke. You do whatever you need to do.” She pulled out a chair, picked up the cat occupying it, and sat with the old feline in her arms. “I’ll just stay here and keep you company.”

“Great. I shouldn’t be long.”

“Take your time, dear. I’ve yet to find a good enough reason to rush through anything.”

He smiled as he ducked under the sink to turn off the water valves. His dad often complained about how long Mrs. Teaser took to clean his house. He couldn’t recall ever seeing her in a hurry.

A cat crawled into the cabinet with him and started purring. With the valve tightly in the Off position, Luke started to pull himself out of the cabinet. As he passed the cat, it pressed its nose against his jaw and slid it all the way to his chin, purring the whole time, its tail straight in the air.
