Stonehenge probably was used in different ways at different times: for ceremonies of birth, life, and death; a place of healing; a feasting place; a graveyard; the center of sun or moon festivals; or as a calendar of the seasons. Perhaps it was built to bring together different people from all over England.
On June 21 every year, the sun rises over the Heel Stone in line with the center of Stonehenge. It shines through the double standing stones inside, and light goes through the middle of the horseshoe of stones. Then the rays hit the Altar Stone at the center. This marks the summer solstice—that is what the longest day of the year is called.
