TWENTY-TWO

Fully armored figures in combat gear rushed in, scores of them looking identical. Midnight black armor covered their bodies from neck to heel. The only spot of color was an oddly placed red band around their right arms. Mirrored visors on their helmets reflected the stunned looks of Daniel and the others. Wicked looking weapons were locked and loaded and aimed at each of them. The click-click of marching boots suggested even more troops coming.

Daniel blinked rapidly, trying to get rid of the spots flashing in his eyes. He still couldn’t see, and his ears were filled with an intense ringing. The assault was akin to being caught by his first IED. That explosion had left him rattled, robbing his confidence in the process. It had taken a while before he was ready to get back into the fight.

“Everyone on the ground! Hands behind you heads!” an authoritative voice commanded. The sound was muffled by the helmet’s speakers. “You as well, gargoyle. We have what we need to handle you.”

Daniel obeyed. He thought he could hear the others follow suit. None of that mattered. His one and only concern was getting Sara to safety. The rest could go to hell for all the trouble they’d caused him. The soldiers closed in, wary to remain just far enough away to avoid getting caught by the pair of vengeful dwarves. Whatever else they might be, they were far more experienced and disciplined than the dark elf war parties had been. Daniel became truly worried for the first time tonight.

“So long as no one does anything stupid, we can conclude this affair without any violence,” a vaguely familiar voice announced. “There’s been enough killing to last all of us for a while. Don’t you agree, Daniel?”

He froze, still unable to place the voice. “Who are you? How do you know my name?”

“That is perhaps the dumbest question I’ve heard in a while, my human friend,” the voice replied. “Hasn’t it dawned on you that practically everyone in the clans knows your name? I’ll let that pass for now. We met earlier tonight, and you did me a great service.”

Daniel struggled to think. So much had happened. Then it hit him. It could only be one person. “Xander?”

Emerging through the ranks, he bowed. “None other.”

“Xander!” Angus blurted out.

“But you’re dead?” Fritz said, confused and irritated.

“No one actually witnessed my death, friends. So I thought it best to play it up, for the time being. Tonight’s events are spiraling out of control, and I needed time to think. The war we have all dreaded for so long is about to erupt unless I can get to Princess Gwen in time. Daniel, I would greatly appreciate your continued help.”

“My help has nearly gotten me killed too many times,” he replied.

“Pussy,” Fritz called.

He ignored it. “I just want my wife back. You can have the rest.”

Xander glanced at the bound and blindfolded Sara. “Ah, yes. A most regrettable turn of events. All Morgen’s doing, you understand? Bert,
