Back at the station, Sally fell into the nearest chair as soon as she entered the main office. “That was a mentally exhausting day, one of the worst I’ve ever encountered.”

“Coffee?” Lorne asked.

“Please, we’ve declined the last few, fearing we might get caught short between visits. How have you guys got on?”

Lorne prepared the two coffees and delivered them to Sally and Jack who had also collapsed at his desk. “I managed to pull up the case. When you mentioned that Rob had been arrested, I was kind of expecting to see Falkirk’s name as the SIO.”

Sally sat upright and reached for her cup. “Are you telling me he wasn’t? I must confess, I thought the same.”

“No, it was a DI McIverson.”

Sally frowned. “Can’t say I’ve heard of him, have you?”

Lorne shook her head. “I hadn’t either until I started digging, and surprise, surprise, it turns out that he was a good friend of Falkirk’s.”

“Heck, not cut from the same cloth, I hope?”

“Stuart carried out some extra digging and found quite a few disciplinary notes in his record.”

“Jesus, why didn’t someone higher up see him and Falkirk for what they were, bent coppers, and have the balls to nip it in the bud before things got out of hand?”

“You tell me, because I’m having a tough time working it out for myself,” Lorne replied. “It leaves more than a sour taste in my mouth.”

“Can you give me the file? I want to cast my eye over the statements, see if they all match what we’ve been told by those we’ve interviewed today.”

“And if they don’t?” Jack asked.

“Then we go back and question that person to find out why their stories differ to the events they told our colleagues at the time.”

“Makes sense,” Lorne said. “Do you need a hand?”

“No, it’ll be quicker for me and Jack to trawl through them, if Jack is up to it, thank you, Lorne. I’ll tell you what you can do for me.”

“Name it.”

“Do the financial checks on Rob Caldwell and Abby Goldsmith, if you would?”

“I’ll get on it now.”

The room fell silent. Everyone got on with the tasks they’d either been working on already or, in Lorne’s case, the task she’d just been set. Jack reluctantly held out a hand for his share of the statements.

“Be thorough,” Sally warned.

He raised an eyebrow and muttered, “If you don’t trust me, you can always get someone else to give you a hand.”

His gaze drifted over to Lorne, and Sally chuckled, witnessing the green-eyed monster raise its ugly head.

“Get on with it, that’s an order.”

He grumbled something indecipherable and studied the first statement. Sally supressed the urge to tut and sigh loudly and got down to business.

Sally speed-read her pile of statements within thirty minutes and sat back. “Nothing untoward in there. How about you, Jack?”

“Give me a chance, my brain doesn’t compute as quickly as yours. I’ve only managed to get through two of them.”

“And?”

“Nothing in there that was different to what Maria told us. Why am I not surprised?”

Sally wagged a finger.
