Fred woke to the sound of footsteps on pavement. Shifting, he stretched a little. His whole body felt cold and stiff, and his bed was hard as a board. Brain still fuzzy with sleep, he opened his eyes and found himself staring up at the underside of a roof overhang.

Oh. Right. He’d spent the night on the consulate steps, with his jacket for a pillow.

Blinking the sleep out of his eyes, he realized the approaching footsteps had stopped. Turning his head, he looked up into a pair of watery blue eyes.

“Good morning, Howard.” He grinned. “Hope you slept well.”

Howard raised his eyes to the heavens, sighed, and muttered something under his breath as he stepped over Fred’s legs to get to the doorway.

“You didn’t, huh? Well, I tossed and turned a bit myself. But at least it didn’t rain.”

Howard swung the door open and left it that way, starting toward his desk.

Getting to his feet, Fred stretched his sore muscles and stomped his feet to get some warmth back into them. His stomach growled. “What did you have for supper last night, Howard?”

Howard didn’t answer. He was still muttering, rustling through papers on his desk, and slamming drawers. At last he raised his head and looked toward the door. “Are you going to stand out there all day, or are you coming in to fill out these papers before I change my mind?”

Fred grinned and bent down to pick up his coat.

He’d been starting to worry he might have to miss breakfast.
