Grant Macintosh felt his pace slow with each step toward the cottage porch. Last night’s phone call had caught him completely off guard. His girlfriend Sarah had planned what she called the “perfect city Sunday,” beginning with brunch in the Meatpacking District before a visit to the new floating park on the Hudson River, followed by a walk up the High Line to hit golf balls at the Chelsea Piers driving range. As they were popping into the Met Museum on the Upper East Side, Sarah was gloating about hitting the 20,000-step mark on her Apple Watch for only the second time in her personal history. By the time they had settled into their favorite table at Neary’s for dinner, all Mac wanted was a prime sirloin and some red wine, followed by a good night’s sleep.

And then Melissa had called.

Maybe if he had followed Sarah’s advice and let it go to voicemail, he wouldn’t have learned until today that Riley had disappeared. That news was shocking enough, but Melissa didn’t stop there. The police were treating Charlie and her family like suspects, following her brother to a park and asking questions about Charlie’s first marriage. When Melissa began explaining that Charlie’s former in-laws suspected foul play in his first wife’s death, he knew where the phone call was headed. Charlie needed a lawyer.

He also knew he had no choice. In the years he had known Melissa, he had never heard her sound so distraught. Her stepdaughter was missing, and the police were wasting precious time digging into matters that had nothing to do with Riley’s disappearance. Of course he had to help. That’s what you do for your friends.

Now, only a day later, he wished he had a time machine so he could turn back the clock and make another decision. He could have told Melissa he was too busy, or that Charlie needed an attorney who didn’t have a personal connection to them. But it would have felt heartless. Then again, a day ago, he didn’t know what he knew now.

What he was about to do to Melissa was going to be so much worse.

With trepidation, he rang the doorbell.
