CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
LEAVING THE CAPTAINâS office, Helen went to her desk, plotting out the best way to contact Green. A straightforward phone call would do the trick, but if possible, she didnât want any trail leading back to her. If she had to, if there were no way but to lay out clues for them to catch her at it, she would. At the moment, the idea of an IA investigation, let alone losing her shield due to insubordination, didnât really feel like that big of a deal.
Sitting down at her desk, she shook her head, as if to flick a stray wisp of hair out of her eyes. She had to stop leading with emotion. She was so angry at the chief that losing her job would almost seem a blessing, but she knew that, given another day, or even another hour, she would come to her senses. She had to think, not feel, her way through this.
Which still left the question of contacting Green.
Any sort of electronic medium could be traced, and jetting off to Ohio in the middle of a double-murder investigation didnât seem very practical either. Not to mention that, again, thereâd be a record for Howardâs stooges to find.
If only I had a personal life, she thought, this would be a lot simpler.
With a family, even a niece or nephew, sheâd have an excuse to take off, throw a couple of sick days together, and be on her way. But right now, in the middle of a crisis, sheâd need some kind of solid reason to ask for a couple of days off, the time it would take to drive to Ohio.
A loud thump caused her to glance toward the middle interrogation room.
Along the west wall of the squad room stood six doors. Three of them led to interrogation rooms, while the door to the right of each led to an adjacent observation room. Two of the interrogation room doors stood open, standard procedure when not in use.
At the moment, the squad room was almost empty, and no one else had reacted to the thumping noise. Getting up from her desk, Helen headed to the middle room, but when she grasped the doorknob it wouldnât turn.
Definitely not standard procedure. These rooms were never to be locked. Despite the best of training and protocols, every now and then a suspect managed to sneak in a weapon, usually a knife or other type of edged weapon. The interrogation room doors being locked could prevent officers receiving help at a crucial moment.
Helen reached out and rapped on the door.
âGo away.â She recognized Richie Lattimerâs voice from inside the room.
âDetective Lattimer,â she said, âItâs Lipscomb. Open up, please.â
A long moment slipped by before the knob turned and the door opened.
But only far enough for Lattimer to look out.
âIâm in the middle of a sit down, Helen. Iâll be done with the room in a bit. If youâd justââ
âLet me in, Richie.â
The younger detectiveâs eyes shifted to the side.
âNow,â Helen said.
In the end, the kid really didnât have much choice.
