Chapter 30
The moment Tristan and Leyli left the meeting in the Small Gallery, Ceri met them. Then, the whole way back to the suite, she tried to explain about Theodian's request to spend the evening together. To Tristan, the offer sounded innocent enough, but the girl was clearly worried about it. So, to set his friend at ease, he'd asked Crush to keep an eye on Ley and made up a reason to have a word with the Domn of Lanmont.
The reality was that he never got to use the excuse. As Tristan neared the door to Theodian's private office, the gladiators stationed outside of it bowed their heads in respect. The one on the left rapped soundly on the wood. Theodian's head was peeking out before Tristan could say a word.
"Ah, Lion!" Theodian greeted him. "I had a feeling I'd be seeing you after I showed your girl around the property."
The gladiator on the right snorted in amusement.
"You find that funny, Rat?" Theodian asked in a tone laced with warning.
"Yeah," the man replied smugly. "We all know he's not stumpin' her."
Theodian cuffed the back of the young man's head. "And that's because his partner's married to a Prince."
"Ain't never stopped most men."
Tristan let out an annoyed sigh. "And most men aren't chained to the Queen, who has certain obligations to the country. I am, and I'm not interested in being a lonely man. Just because we were tandem partners doesn't mean I can't meet someone else who makes me happy."
Both guys glanced back to Theodian. "Ain't true for everyone," Rat muttered.
This time, Theodian was the one sighing with annoyance. "Just come in, Tristan. I'm convinced I'm never going to teach some of these guys how to act civilized, and I have something for you." He stepped back to give the Secor room to pass and told his gladiators, "Just don't talk to anyone else today, ok?"
"Yes, sir," they replied in unison before the door closed.
Then Theodian turned. "I have the necklace Leyli asked about. Seems there was nothing wrong with it except an old chain and a lot of dirt." He moved to his desk along the side wall. "Which means you can wear it, and I got the impression Leyli wants you to."
"Yeah," Tristan breathed as he headed for the closest chair. When Theodian passed him the wooden pendant, he slipped it over his neck without thinking. "Thanks, but Theodian, you can't see Ceri."
His eyes narrowed as he thought about that. "Tristan, I just showed her how a few others use the greatsword."
"Today, yes. I got that impression from what she told me â which was a bit jumbled all over itself and hard to understand, but still. What I'm trying to tell you is that there's no future there."
Slowly, Theodian nodded. "This sounds like we're going to need a drink to go with it."
"Definitely. Please tell me you have some wine?"
Theodian headed to the sideboard. "Has the Wolf made you as picky about it as she is?"
"No. Not even close, and I still prefer beer, if you want to know the truth.
