The Red Room hasnât changed much in the years since I crossed its glowing red neon threshold.
Flaunting the flashy underworld sentiment of the cityâs trashy old red-light districts, the lounge is still covered in shiny red wallpaper that resembles Christmas wrappings and flooded with wafting cigarette smoke amid the dimly lit neon glow. Itâs truly a blast from the past, captured in the annals of time.
Not knowing who or what Iâm looking for, I take a seat at the red leather bar and make myself conspicuous.
âIâm May Beck and Iâll have a bourbon, neat.â I say to the bartender loud enough to be overheard.
Soon after my drink is placed at my fingertips, a man stealthily approaches me from behind.
âYou Beck?â he says in a gravelly voice.
I turn my stool around to see a gruff-looking hulk of a man shadowed by the dead light above and a stale nicotine mist. Such a visitor would startle most women. But not me. Itâs just a day in the life.
âYes,â I coolly respond. I stick out my hand to shake his, but he rebuffs it and puffs his cigarette smoke in my face.
âHere,â he says, handing me a piece of paper. Then he disappears as fast as he came.
Curious, I take a sip of my drink and read the note, cautiously hiding it from any onlooking view. It reads:
Lucky Lou, Chicago Street Tavern, 8 pm tomorrow.
It didnât take a detective to figure out this is the name of my informant. For a moment, I wonder how they knew where or what I needed information on. The Chicago Street Tavern is a block away from the newspaper, so this Lucky must be local. But then I remember, the mob hears all and sees all, everywhere.
So I gulp the rest of my drink and leave. But as I close the heavy wooden door behind me, I hear a loud noise and see a car careening right in front of me. Then thereâs a sudden flash and the car then screeches off into the distance.
My life flashes before my eyes as Iâm stuck in a seeming endless void.
