In the Pocket

The businessman strode confidently out of Riverpark Square. He didn’t carry any shopping bags, so perhaps he ate lunch at the downtown mall. He pressed a cell phone to his left ear while his right hand gestured wildly. A dark blue suit hung nicely from his broad shoulders, but the swing of its pockets seemed off. The left flopped heavily while the right swayed with the rhythm of his gait. He turned left and headed east along Main Street.

I was stuck at the crosswalk with cars between us. Dodging vehicular traffic while running to catch up to the guy would draw too much attention. I abandoned my plan to cross the street and hurried eastbound on the sidewalk. I walked quickly, almost skipping, to get ahead of my quarry.

A group of attractive women noticed the executive when they walked by, yet he didn’t seem to care. He continued to chatter into his phone and gesticulate wildly.

The lunchtime crowd was out to take advantage of the sunny afternoon. The businessman seemed unimpressed by it all. He gestured while he talked and repeatedly pointed at nothing, as if emphasizing something important.

I waited for him at the intersection of Main and Wall. When he got to the corner, he stopped and waited for the light to change. We faced each other, but he had no clue I even existed. He checked his watch and looked both ways, as if he were about to cross against the light. A car was coming, so he remained on his side of the street. Several people stood nearby him and waited for the light to change.

Two men moved next to me. Their conversation sounded something about real estate.

“The closing is set for tomorrow. Can you believe he’s doing that deal?”

“How big is the fee? I hear it’s six figures.”

“That’s what I heard, too. The fucker.”

The light changed, and everyone entered the crosswalk. I positioned myself in my quarry’s path. His focus was somewhere over my shoulder. He continued to gesture with his free hand as he spoke. His tanned face was perfectly shaved, and his hair appeared recently cut.

I stumbled and fell into him.

The executive caught me with his free hand. He spun me around—an impromptu pirouette—but he never stopped talking into the phone. “Let’s counter.”

“Sorry,” I said.

He let go of my waist and nodded. As he backpedaled, he waved once. “Take it up another quarter mil. That’s right.”

I waved back.

“They’ll take it. What other choice have they got?”

He spun and hopped up onto the sidewalk.
