Chapter 16

Following the ceremony, Champagne and other drinks, as well as hors d’oeuvres were served by a catering company.

It was still early…only approaching noon. Sheridan knew they all had to get back on the minibus and return to the airport to catch their private plane at two-thirty. The Sea Goddess would then leave Athens at a little around five p.m.

Soon after she had taken a plate containing spanakopita, stuffed cucumber bites, and a puff pastry with kalamata olives, she saw Ainsley’s father approaching her.

He was a suntanned and slender gentleman, with silver hair that was perfectly coiffed. He was dressed in white linen pants, sandals, and a Hawaiian shirt, yet somehow he still looked as if he could facilitate a Board of Directors meeting.

Sheridan might have thought he was coming just to get some food, but he was looking directly at her as he walked (somehow) gracefully over the sand.

“Hello,” he greeted her and Fiona. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Hank Janowicz, Ainsley’s father. Please call me Hank.”

He shook both their hands.

“Fiona Nicholson,” Fiona introduced herself.

“Sheridan Dawes,” Sheridan said when it was her turn.

“I hope I’m not interrupting?” Hank prodded.

“Not at all,” Sheridan told him. “We were just getting some food…”

“I won’t keep you long,” Hank promised. “You used to work for Rivers Wright, didn’t you?”

Sheridan’s eyebrows shot up.

“I did!” she replied. “Do you know Rivers?”

“Only by reputation,” Hank said. “I’m the district attorney for San Diego. I used to follow his legal career quite closely, back when he was the DA for New York. He and I have a lot in common, ideologically. I don’t mind admitting that I’m something of a fan. It was quite amazing what he was able to do in that city.”

Sheridan smiled.

Politics was a nasty business, full of nasty individuals, but she was very proud of having been part of the mayor’s—she still thought of him as that—campaign and administration. Rivers as a person was very similar to herself in terms of their stances on education, racial equality, childcare, housing and poverty, and—extremely important to her—women’s rights…and as mayor, he had done a lot to ensure that New York City remained the progressive-thinking bulwark it had long been, while also making tangible differences in many peoples’ lives.

“I will be sure to tell him that the next time I see him,” Sheridan told Hank.

“Please do,” Hank said. “And actually…I’m considering my own run for mayor of San Diego.”

Sheridan wasn’t surprised. District attorney-to-mayor was a common career path in this country. She didn’t know who his competition would be, but she gauged his chances were probably extremely good. He was very handsome and had a polished demeanor. What’s more, his family was practically made for the White House: Surgeon wife, who had maintained her looks, and a surgeon daughter who was as pretty a supermodel.

And…bonus! The surgeon daughter was a lesbian! So there was that bloc of the electorate practically sewn up.

“Listen…” Hank began. “I don’t know what you’re currently working on, but if you’re
