To summarise, here are the vitamin supplements I’d recommend for the following conditions:

1. Energy – coenzyme Q10, 150 milligrams, two daily; as well as magnesium orotate, 400 milligrams, one to two daily (this supplement is particularly important if you’re taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol).

2. Metabolic syndrome – chromium, 400 micrograms, especially if combined with cinnamon in either a capsule, or as a typical preparation purchased from a supermarket; Bergamet, purple carrots (I’ll explain more about both of these later in the book).

3. Cardiovascular support – a variety of supplements have been shown to provide benefit: fish oil or flax seed, at least 4 grams daily; as well as hawthorn herbal treatment, 600 to 1200 milligrams daily, and vitamin E 500 international units of d-alpha-tocopherol around the evening meal. Also, vitamin C 500 to 1000 milligrams taken with vitamin E around the evening meal.

In another blow to the supplement sceptics, a recent study from Israel treated 70 patients for six months. This randomised controlled clinical trial used vitamin C, 1 gram daily; vitamin E, 400 international units daily; coenzyme Q10, 120 milligrams daily, and selenium, 200 micrograms per day, compared with a placebo.

Arterial stiffness was measured, along with metabolic profile (cholesterol, blood sugar level etc). There was a significant improvement in the treated group over this short period of time. Parameters of arterial stiffness improved, along with a drop in diabetic levels and an improvement in HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

4. Brain – (Alzheimer’s disease prevention: folic acid, 800 micrograms; B6, 20 milligrams; B12, 500 micrograms daily) Brahmi/Ginkgo biloba/phosphatidylserine.

5. Hormones – a variety of natural supplements have been proposed. As this is such an individual area and requires full supervision by an expert, I’d suggest seeking a professional opinion if you’re significantly affected by menopause or andropause.

6. Gastrointestinal – numerous herbs and detoxification programs have been proposed to maintain gut health. There is also strong evidence for a variety of probiotics.

7. Kidneys – this is a tricky area and unfortunately a handful of people with serious kidney disease have been given dangerous advice by a small group of CAM therapists. There is, in fact, a rarely used Chinese herb, aristolochic acid, which may induce end stage kidney failure.

If there is any suggestion of kidney disease, you need expert assessment from your doctor.

8. Skin – a variety of supplements are used very commonly in skin creams and lotions which claim to maintain skin integrity and reduce wrinkles.

A number of supplements, including olive fruit extract, have been shown to concentrate in the skin. In one study there was a 40 per cent reduction in wrinkles using an olive fruit extract.

9. Connective tissues – regarding the muscles, coenzyme Q10 is a specific muscle supplement and it’s my opinion that it should be used in the vast majority of people over the age of 40 to 50, unless there is a specific medical contraindication.

10. The blood and immune system – over the years, many experts have suggested a number of natural immune stimulants.
