A Tiger Is Both Soft and Hard

TIGER

I didn’t realize I was staring at Loretta until she glanced my way across Colette’s dining room table and blushed, glancing down for a moment before pointedly studying Birdie’s face as the woman kept on talking about Reginald’s punishment, which she wholeheartedly endorsed, her hands moving in wide, animated flourishes. Loretta laughed on cue with the rest of those seated at the table—her parents, Cole, and the unshakable Rhett and Zeke—as Birdie recounted Magnolia punching her former husband and our former mayor across the jaw. All of us seated for dinner had been there when it happened, so we all knew Birdie’s descriptions of Reginald’s face whipping in the opposite direction as the blow—spit and teeth flying—a purple bruise already blossoming across his jaw, to be exaggerations only loosely based in the truth. Not even Levi had knocked out the man’s teeth, though I guessed he’d wanted to along with the rest of us.

But no one seemed to care that Birdie was about as accurate as Buster Brane taking a piss and spraying everywhere when he’d had one too many. I surely didn’t. As Colette laughed so hard she teared up before passing around the piping hot biscuits fresh from the oven, I stole another glance at Loretta.

She was well aware of my feelings for her; I’d made sure of that. But when I’d confessed my love, neither one of us had expected that I’d ever become a man again.

In my creature form, I’d stared my fill with abandon. My tiger had never made her uncomfortable. Certainly, my attentions had never made her squirm as they’d done several times already since my shift back into a man.

With how insistent Rhett and Zeke were, hardly granting her any space at all, even when she asked for it, I was trying to allow her the opportunity to come to terms with my manhood on her own.

But I couldn’t seem to help myself. It had taken me long years, but eventually I’d given up on hoping I’d ever get the chance to return to the man I was. To have hope once more so suddenly, so unexpectedly, had me spinning and veering out of control. I could finally be with the woman I loved. It had seemed so impossible that it became a dream I’d felt stupid for having half the time. The rest of the time, it was what had kept me going.

Now my love for Loretta was no longer a curse as painful as the one that had trapped me in my tiger.

If only she loved me back.

If only she’d chosen me when she’d already accepted not one, but two other men, who routinely glared at me as if to say, Back off, she’s ours.
