I’m unsure how exactly to feel now that we’ve left the Agency for Texas Hill Country. Saddened by the fact that I have to leave Belle behind once more, but knowing that Emily Bane will care for her in the interim, I sink back into my seat and try my hardest not to falter, to no avail.

“Hey,” Jackson says, tilting his head down to look me in the eyes. “You’re not having doubts now, are you?”

“Hard not to doubt when the end of the world is coming,” I mumble.

“We don’t know if it’s coming yet,” Scarlet says. “That’s why we’re heading to Texas Hill Country—to see if we can have a creature of foresight to divine for us.”

“What do you mean a creature of foresight?” Jackson replies. “Are you saying this… kelda… isn’t human?”

“The kelda folkhagi is what many consider a demigoddess—a long-lived creature who fled Norway alongside the Kaldr.”

“Do you know what she looks like?”

“I’ve only seen drawings,” Scarlet says, “but I assure you: she is not human. Humanoid, but not human.”

With a nod, Jackson settles back into his seat beside me and turns his head to look out the window at our backs. This early in the morning, the flow of cars is still massive, but we’re leaving the city at such a speed that I imagine we’ll soon be out of rush-hour traffic. The dark, sun-kissed sky appears malevolent at this hour, and appears to be threatening me with omens of things to come.

Please, I think, and close my eyes, keep us safe, Mother Wolf. Keep me safe.

“You’re tired,” Jackson says.

“Yeah,” I say through a yawn. “We haven’t slept since last night.”

“Now would be a good time to get some rest,” Scarlet chimes in. “We’ll be there in five hours.”

“Okay,” Jackson and I say.

We stare at each other for several long moments, as if anticipating whether or not we will share the space between us. However—as Jackson sprawls out along the couch, and as he lifts his head to look at me, I find myself relenting to my primal desire to sleep, and sprawl out alongside him.

He drapes an arm over me. Laces our fingers together. Breathes.

I tuck my head beneath my chin and sigh.

There is no telling what we’ll find at the Hill Country Kaldr’s home.

For all I know, we’re heading straight into destruction.
