Not Even Dragons Poop Gold Nuggets

Just when I’d discovered the strength to press Rhett for answers instead of all that hogwash he was spewing, the door to my office flew open so hard that plaster splintered when it knocked against the wall.

I shifted against Tiger to direct my newfound strength at the brute who’d entered my office like a dust storm, but hesitated when I found Coby Rae standing there.

The woman made no secret about having a crush on me. She was worse than Rhett in the way she blatantly checked me out.

Usually.

Now her eyeballs were vibrating in their sockets, and the normally brazen woman appeared unsure. “Loretta?” she said, softer than she might have ever spoken before. “What … what’s goin’ on here? Jolene and Triple C are goin’ crazy out there, and they’re settin’ off all the other horses.”

Triple C was short for Chocolate Chip Cookie, Birdie’s Appaloosa gelding, so named for the multitude of brown spots peppered across his coat.

“Why … why do ya look like a lamppost, all juiced up with Tucker’s magic?” she went on without waiting for a response from any of us. “And why are you wearin’ Doc’s belt around your arm?”

“How’d you know it was Doc’s belt?” Birdie asked, as if that were the most important point to unpack from the scene.

Coby Rae pointed in my general direction. “I recognize the buckle. She’s the only one with a unicorn on hers.”

I didn’t even bother glancing down to confirm. I had my priorities straight—or at least straighter. A new wave of heat surged inside my body, hurrying me along. I had no idea what was about to happen to me.

“You didn’t come in here just because of the horses,” I told Coby Rae, who was never one to concern herself much with others’ business—unless it pertained to my curves.

“I didn’t…”

“And?” I pressed. “So what is it?”

“Well, I heard you got bit by a dragon.” That was a given. News spread through Traitor’s Den faster than an unchecked wildfire. “But seein’ you like this, all”—she waved both hands in my general direction—“you know…”

I didn’t know, actually. But I wasn’t inclined to ask for details. The way everyone kept looking at me as if I were about to keel over, or perhaps catch fire, was sufficient to paint a picture.

“Go on,” I said. “You obviously tore in here like a rabid ‘coon’s on your heels for a reason.”

“Yeah, don’t worry ‘bout that. It’s nothin’.”

At this point, I was pretty sure I’d croak from impatience before I died from any other ailment. “Tell me or go, but whatever you do, best be doin’ it now.” I didn’t bother saying I had pressing matters to attend to; Coby Rae wasn’t stupid.

“Fine,” she said. “It’s Kiki.”

Birdie drew in a gasp that hissed like a whistle. “What’s wrong with Kiki?”

“Coby Rae didn’t say nothin’ about something being wrong with her, Birdie,” I admonished, though my stomach was busy sinking, proving me a hypocrite.

Kiki had come through the pocket
