Not Your Job
Back in his office at Nancarrow Mining, Gareth shrugged out of his coat and settled at his desk. During his taxi ride, the resolve to make Aidan reconsider his stance had replaced his irritation.
When Aidan involved himself in a case, he started with the data: every scrap of evidence collected during the police investigation, everything the prosecution thought proved their case, and the information the defence team had amassed in their corner. Aidan made sure he heard every side of the argument.
Gareth had data for only one side of Lucy Harmonâs case. He had her story, which Aidan considered insufficient.
Fine.
He dialled Lisaâs number.
She answered on the second ring. âGareth. Are you going to read me the riot act?â
âDo I have a reason?â
âI heard Baxter called Jack for help.â
âHe did, yes.â
âAnd thatâs not an issue?â
âIt isnât. Jackâs careful. Sensible. We both are.â The silence dragged while Lisa digested that. Gareth didnât explain the compromise he and Jack had reached, or how it was working out for them.
âIf this isnât about Jack, then to what do I owe the pleasure?â
âI was wondering if youâd let me pick your brain.â
âPick away.â
âIâm looking for information on an ongoing investigation,â Gareth cautioned.
âOh?â
âDo you remember Rachel Whitestone? She runs the deli in Richmond High Street.â
âI remember.â
âThe police arrested a friend of hers on a drugs charge. The woman, Lucy Harmon, sells jams and cupcakes at the local farmersâ market.â
âAnd drugs on the side?â
Gareth snorted. âNever in a month of Sundays. Sheâs sixty, Lisa!â
âThatâs no deterrent. And no, Iâm not mocking you.â
âI know. I was justââ
âWondering how to help, no doubt.â
âIs that irony Iâm hearing?â
âNo. Itâs cute that you still have that mindset after a couple of years of living with Jack.â
âI think Iâll not ask you to explain that one.â Gareth mashed his lips together before his irritation spilled over. âDo you know whatâs going on?â
âLet me see what I can find out. But Gareth ⦠I understand that sheâs the friend of a friend and you want to help. Just remember that this isnât your job.â
Garethâs jaw dropped. For a few heartbeats, he stared at the handset as if heâd never seen one before. âHow many times have you told Jack that it wasnât his job to help you?â
He sensed, more than heard, Lisaâs amusement.
âTouché.â
