Not Your Job

Back in his office at Nancarrow Mining, Gareth shrugged out of his coat and settled at his desk. During his taxi ride, the resolve to make Aidan reconsider his stance had replaced his irritation.

When Aidan involved himself in a case, he started with the data: every scrap of evidence collected during the police investigation, everything the prosecution thought proved their case, and the information the defence team had amassed in their corner. Aidan made sure he heard every side of the argument.

Gareth had data for only one side of Lucy Harmon’s case. He had her story, which Aidan considered insufficient.

Fine.

He dialled Lisa’s number.

She answered on the second ring. “Gareth. Are you going to read me the riot act?”

“Do I have a reason?”

“I heard Baxter called Jack for help.”

“He did, yes.”

“And that’s not an issue?”

“It isn’t. Jack’s careful. Sensible. We both are.” The silence dragged while Lisa digested that. Gareth didn’t explain the compromise he and Jack had reached, or how it was working out for them.

“If this isn’t about Jack, then to what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I was wondering if you’d let me pick your brain.”

“Pick away.”

“I’m looking for information on an ongoing investigation,” Gareth cautioned.

“Oh?”

“Do you remember Rachel Whitestone? She runs the deli in Richmond High Street.”

“I remember.”

“The police arrested a friend of hers on a drugs charge. The woman, Lucy Harmon, sells jams and cupcakes at the local farmers’ market.”

“And drugs on the side?”

Gareth snorted. “Never in a month of Sundays. She’s sixty, Lisa!”

“That’s no deterrent. And no, I’m not mocking you.”

“I know. I was just—”

“Wondering how to help, no doubt.”

“Is that irony I’m hearing?”

“No. It’s cute that you still have that mindset after a couple of years of living with Jack.”

“I think I’ll not ask you to explain that one.” Gareth mashed his lips together before his irritation spilled over. “Do you know what’s going on?”

“Let me see what I can find out. But Gareth … I understand that she’s the friend of a friend and you want to help. Just remember that this isn’t your job.”

Gareth’s jaw dropped. For a few heartbeats, he stared at the handset as if he’d never seen one before. “How many times have you told Jack that it wasn’t his job to help you?”

He sensed, more than heard, Lisa’s amusement.

“Touché.”
