A little man with a fox-like face stood just inside the shop. He was maybe four foot two, wiry thin, bandy-legged, wearing baggy pants and an oversized sweater. His skin had a faintly gray cast to it, his dark gray hair was thinning and uncombed. His eyes were dark, almost black. When he smiled, his teeth were surprisingly white against his almost black gums, and a little pointier than Cary might have expected.
Marianne sighed, put her free hand on her hip, and said, âHow many times do I have to tell your impy-ass to leave me alone? Iâm not helping you.â
âYou will, you will,â the man said, his voice high and squeaky. âYou and your sisters are needed. You will. He sent me for you.â
âAnd you can tell him no. Again. Iâm not spinning gold for that bastard.â
âSpinning gold?â Cary asked, looking between the little man and Marianne. âYou can do that?â
Marianne waved a hand in the air. âThink of it as a metaphor.â
Okay. Cary narrowed her eyes at the little man.
âHe said you should come or else,â the man said, with a slight laugh that sounded reflexive more than amused.
âOr else what?â Marianne said. âI am not his servant to call whenever he likes.â
âWhoâs he?â Cary asked.
âThis asshole king who thinks Iâm here to do his bidding,â Marianne said.
âA king?â Cary said.
âMy king will have his way,â the little man said.
This was all very weird, Cary thought. Although, after six months of her new job, her definition of weird had altered radically. She just hadnât been anticipating weird at Marianneâs shop.
Marianne pointed a finger at the door. âLeave. I have a customer. I donât have time for this nonsense.â
The little man giggled again, then pulled something out from the hem of his sweater. Cary had just enough time to recognize it as a crystal ball, a very small one, maybe the size of a baseball, and as clear as a water bubble. The manâs smile widened into something truly horrifying.
And then he threw the ball at Marianne.
Instinctively, Cary stepped in front of her friend. She wasnât even sure what she was blocking, but sure enough her powers worked because the ball stopped a few inches in front of her face and just hung in the air, vibrating.
So. Obviously a threat then.
Cary blinked when it swung to one side, then another, as if it were trying to find a way around her.
And not an ordinary glass ball.
âHow are you doing that?â Marianne asked.
âLong story,â Cary said. âPart of the new job. What the hell is that thing?â
The ball swung back a few feet then came flying at them again. Cary put a hand on Marianneâs arm to keep her from moving. She flinched when the ball got as close as a few inches from her nose before stopping abruptly.
The little man started dancing around and stomping his feet. âNo no no. Itâs supposed to work. Why isnât it working? You have to come with me. He insists. He wants his gold.
