Every conversation was playing with fire. Almost an entire day had passed since Tommy had infiltrated the group in Spearfish. This militia group was very different from those he’d met in Kentucky. They were operating on a level that was only to be found among ex-military guys and folks hell-bent on spreading a warped gospel.

Although it would take many to achieve the end goal, it was clear that recruitment wasn’t an issue.

In the cafeteria, Tommy spoke with newcomers and heard their reasons for joining. While it varied from person to person, for most it was the same — survival. With the United Patriots, they would get three meals a day, a warm bed, and around-the-clock protection from those they stood beside. Who wouldn’t want that when the world around them was falling apart at the seams?

But at what cost?

The death of innocents?

So far everyone he’d met had been tight-lipped about the night of Sarah’s demise. There was a collective sense that the night of their arrival hadn’t gone exactly as planned but discussing it, let alone giving it any thought, was shunned. He’d had to be careful how he worded his questions. He knew they were watching him. All of them. No organization came this far without scrutiny.

Now he was on his own with Bodhi.

He’d come to learn the pecking order in a matter of hours. If anyone knew what happened, it would be Wes’ right-hand man. At least that’s how others were touting Bodhi. His rise through the ranks had shocked some, impressed others, and frustrated the rest. If there was one thing that didn’t change no matter who a group was, it was jealousy. I should be where he is, she doesn’t deserve XYZ, why is that person getting better treatment or all the attention? Humanity was so predictable.

After collecting Tommy from the cafeteria, Bodhi had told him to get two horses while he spoke with someone. Returning with the animals in tow, he held tightly to the reins and watched Bodhi converse with five others. It was disgraceful to think that they’d donned the uniforms of dead officers. Where had they buried them? Had they dumped them the same way they had Sarah?

When Bodhi was ready to leave, he approached.

“Ready to go?” Bodhi asked.

“Where?”

“You’ll see.”

Tommy would have been lying to say that he wasn’t nervous. Was this a test? Had word gotten out about his questions? Was he being taken into the middle of the forest to be executed when he wasn’t looking?

As evening fell, they rode side by side, heading southeast. After being peppered with multiple questions about his time living in the east, Tommy opted to turn the tables and learn a little about the man that had worked his way into the inner circle.

“So, what about you?”

Bodhi, a man in his mid-forties, cut him a disinterested glance. Unlike the others, who looked like they’d been dragged through a tree backward, he was clean-shaven. The police uniform he wore beneath the flak vest was crisp as if he took pride in it.
