When Dan laid his head on the down-filled pillow in his bedroom that night, the tiny room was spinning. He moaned quietly at his stupidity in accepting one too many whisky chasers. Tyler had seemed more sensible, switching to cokes at one point in the evening. He wondered if they were technically still on duty even, as they’d not been able to leave the island when intended.

Dan heard a faint knock at his door. He managed to call out, “come in!” before a wave of nausea and dizziness struck.

He opened his eyes to a slit and saw Tyler enter with a pint glass full of water. “The landlord thought you might want this.” He placed it on the bedside table.

“Thanks. That’s exactly what I need.”

“That whisky was strong stuff. I’m not really a fan myself.”

“Very sensible. I’m going to feel like shit in the morning. Don’t tell the DCI, will you?”

“Course not. Besides, drinking with the locals helps them open up to you.” Tyler perched on the end of the bed, the motion causing Dan’s stomach to lurch.

“Which is not much good if you can’t recall what they tell you.”

“I bumped into Lonny, the ferryman, on my way to the toilet. He said Ian’s not been on his boat for at least twelve months. Then, when I got back to my seat, I got talking to the local man, Ciaran. He was pretty drunk by the end of the evening. He said something interesting.”

“Oh yes?” Dan was trying to concentrate, but he could already feel the beginnings of a headache making his skull feel like it was being slowly constricted in a vice.

“He said no more English would come to the island, but they had done once. He said Hugh was the only one left and that’s because he was too broken to leave.” Tyler yawned. “Only, I was intrigued by this, although I got the sense the landlord and Mick didn’t want Ciaran to say any more. They kept changing the subject. Then, I thought about Ian Lester going to visit this old Hugh fella and I wondered if there was any kind of connection. Though I can’t think what it could be.” Tyler waited for his colleague to reply. Eventually, he shook Dan’s leg, but received only an undignified snort as a response. The young officer rose to his feet and sighed, leaving his friend passed out cold on his bed.
