* Pitch and toss was played by someone placing three pennies on the tips of their three upward-pointing fingers. These coins were then tossed into the air and people gambled on the number of heads or tails that were facing up when landing back on the ground.
CHAPTER 11
A Sprat to Catch a Mackerel
Human nature is a funny thing and luckily for us we are all very different from each other. As policemen we encountered people from all walks of life and backgrounds; and the areas in which I worked contained working-class houses and working-class people, just the way I liked it â nothing fancy.
People used to say that if you were a policeman you would never have any friends; what a load of rubbish; if you were right with them then they would be right with you. We cared about people and their safety and especially those who were being bullied and couldnât defend themselves.
Over the last couple of months both Rick, John and myself had been getting feedback from our favourite watering hole that Marlene, the prostitute, was getting beaten on a regular basis by Mr Nasty Pimp, the sadistic pillock who ran her and three other girls. More often than not the people who get involved in prostitution do so by choice and for their own reasons. Marleneâs case, however, was very different â sheâd been forced into it and was now being used as a commodity by the bully boy.
He was obviously a nasty piece of work who, as far as we were aware, had never legally worked; and to make matters more annoying still, when I discreetly checked with the dole office on West Street, I discovered that he was also on the dole. So not content with making a good living off the earnings of four prostitutes who he beat up on a regular basis, he also had the nerve to claim benefits as well. Apart from living off immoral earnings and claiming the dole none of us could abide or respect violent thugs who beat up women. Time for some action.
The offence of living off immoral earnings was a difficult one to prove, mainly because the four girls were already in fear of violence and would not make a complaint. Mr Nasty Pimpâs method of operation was to wait outside the block of flats where the girls used to take their clients in order to give them a good time. When the client left â skint but happy, and hoping that he hadnât caught a dose of something â Mr Nasty Pimp would nip upstairs and grab all the money off whichever girl had done the business. She would then be made to go back on the streets and would be required to attract another client as quickly as possible. This would go on all day or night until she had met her imposed target; and if she didnât achieve that target then she would get beaten up in such a way so as not to be marked.
